Project Cargo

What Is Project Cargo?

What makes a shipment project cargo, the equipment involved and how heavy and oversized cargo is planned.

Heavy industrial vessel lifted from a ship onto a modular trailer

Project cargo refers to shipments that are oversized, heavy, high value or complex, usually linked to an industrial project with a schedule. Think of generators, transformers, drilling equipment, pressure vessels, turbines or complete plant modules.

What makes it different is not only the size of the cargo but the planning: every piece, route and lift has to be studied before the cargo moves.

Types of project cargo

  • Out of Gauge (OOG): cargo that exceeds the dimensions of a standard container.
  • Heavy lift: pieces that require special cranes or vessels with heavy lift gear.
  • Breakbulk: cargo loaded piece by piece on general cargo or multipurpose vessels.
  • Ro-Ro: machinery that can roll on and off the vessel.

Equipment commonly used

Stage Equipment
Ocean Flat racks, open tops, breakbulk vessels, chartered vessels
Port Ship cranes, mobile cranes, heavy lift spreaders
Road Lowboys, step decks, extendable trailers, multi-axle modular trailers

How a project shipment is planned

  1. Cargo data. Weight, dimensions and center of gravity of each piece, with drawings and lifting points.
  2. Route survey. Road conditions, bridges, curves, power lines and access to the site.
  3. Permits and escorts. Oversize and overweight permits and, when required, escort vehicles.
  4. Port and vessel. Port capabilities, available cranes and the most suitable vessel type.
  5. Lifting and securing. Lifting plans, rigging, lashing and securing for each stage.
  6. Documentation and insurance. Export and import documents, and cargo insurance through authorized providers.
  7. Coordination on site. Timing windows and communication with everyone involved.

What to send to request a quote

  • A list of pieces with weight and dimensions of each one.
  • Drawings or photos, especially of lifting points.
  • Origin and destination addresses and any site restrictions.
  • When the cargo will be ready and the project’s key dates.
